Step 1: Take everything out of your closet, this will let you start with a clean slate.
Step 2: Sort pieces by type (sweaters with sweaters) etc. Now is also the time to start four piles. One for donation, one for alterations, trash, and one for pieces that you can sell on consignment sites like Poshmark and Depop.
Step 3: After sorting give a quick look over to see what stays/goes. Ask yourself if you went shopping now would you buy this item? If the answer is no drop it in the donate pile or consignment pile. A universal rule of thumb is that if you haven’t worn it in the past year, it’s time to let it go.
Step 4: Organize your clothes by how you utilize your closet! Coats that were in hibernation during the summer are now ready to come out and play!
Step 5: Invest in thin hangers thin hangers. Slim hangers equal more space, and they always look chicer. You can purchase these hangers at you local Wal-Mart, Target, TJ Maxx or online at Amazon.
Step 6: Put everything back on the rack and take inventory of what you already have to prepare a list of what you will need. This will save you time and money during your shopping trips.
Step 7: Get rid of any items that you are not wearing today such as pieces that are too big and too small or anything you haven’t worn in the past year. Toss It, Donate It, Get It Out! If any items have holes, stains or yellowing throw them in the trash. Pieces that need alternations take them to your local tailor.
